We’ve made the choice to make our own baby food around here. It’s just so simple to do, plus it’s fun to pick out the fresh ingredients to make for Liliana. We find that if we plan ahead by having enough storage containers and making large batches on Sunday for the week ahead—it’s easy!
SWEET POTATO PUREE
Liliana loves sweet potato! She perfected eating on this simple blended recipe.
How to make:
Take two large sweet potatoes and prick skin with a small knife and place on a baking sheet. Preheat oven to 425. Place baking sheet in oven and roast until skin is wrinkled and knife can easily puncture skin. 45-60 minutes.
Let cool and half sweet potatoes, scoop out flesh from skin, and puree flesh until smooth add water until you get desired consistency.
ENGLISH PEA PUREE
I tried to cut corners by buying frozen peas the very first time. But buying English Peas in the pod and steaming them that way, made for a sweeter flavor and a smoother consistency. And when you’re making baby food, consistency and flavor are key so don’t skimp if you can avoid it.
How to make:
Take 2 cups of peas, place them in steamer basket. Bring 1 inch of water to boil in pot. Place steamer basket in pot, cover and steam until bright green and tender. Around 3-5 minutes. Remove and let pods cool and set liquid aside. Once they are easy to touch, push the peas out of the pod into a bowl.
Puree peas until smooth. Add cooking liquid until you get desired consistency.
Can freeze for three months or 3 days in the refrigerator.
TIP: No need to buy anything fancy. You can use a steamer basket, or use a pasta strainer instead. And we didn’t buy a fancy blender, we just use the immersion blender we’ve had for years.
